RED CRK
Red Creek Recordings, also known as RED CRK, is an independent Swedish record label established in 2020 by Johannes Persson, guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of the post-metal band Cult of Luna. Created as a platform for artistic independence and creative freedom, the label focuses on post-metal, sludge metal, atmospheric metal, experimental rock, and alternative heavy music. Its identity reflects a commitment to uncompromising artistic expression, immersive soundscapes, and music that challenges conventional genre boundaries.
The label emerged from Cult of Luna's desire to gain greater control over its recordings, production, and artistic direction. After more than two decades of working with established independent labels, including Earache Records and Metal Blade Records, the band sought a more autonomous approach to releasing music. Red Creek Recordings was conceived as an extension of this philosophy, allowing musicians to preserve their creative vision while developing closer relationships with their audience.
The label's first major release was The Raging River, an EP by Cult of Luna issued in 2021. Featuring five compositions, including Inside of a Dream with guest vocals from Mark Lanegan, the recording continued the atmospheric and introspective direction of the band's previous album, A Dawn to Fear. Combining monumental guitar arrangements, hypnotic rhythms, and delicate ambient passages, the EP established the label's musical identity through a balance of extreme heaviness and emotional depth.
In 2022, Red Creek Recordings released The Long Road North, Cult of Luna's ninth studio album. Inspired by the landscapes and emotional associations of northern Sweden, the record expanded the band's characteristic sound through orchestral arrangements, atmospheric electronics, and collaborations with Colin Stetson, Mariam Wallentin, and Christian Mazzalai. Its expansive compositions demonstrated the label's commitment to ambitious musical projects that prioritize artistic coherence over commercial conventions.
Beyond Cult of Luna, Red Creek Recordings has developed its identity as a platform for artists working at the intersection of heavy music and experimental sound. Its approach emphasizes carefully produced recordings, distinctive visual presentation, and physical formats, particularly vinyl editions that reinforce the connection between music, artwork, and the listening experience.
Although relatively young, Red Creek Recordings represents an important development in the independent post-metal landscape. By combining the experience of established musicians with the flexibility of an artist-led label, Johannes Persson has created a structure dedicated to creative autonomy and long-term artistic development. RED CRK ultimately embodies the same principles that have defined Cult of Luna's music for more than two decades, transforming heaviness, atmosphere, and experimentation into a coherent artistic vision.
