Colemine Records
Colemine Records is an independent American record label founded in 2007 by Terry Cole in Oxford, Ohio. Specializing in soul, funk, jazz, rhythm and blues, and instrumental groove music, the label has become an important force within the contemporary revival of vintage-inspired American soul. Drawing inspiration from the independent record companies of the 1960s and 1970s, Colemine Records combines warm analogue production, expressive instrumentation, and a strong commitment to vinyl culture, particularly the 7-inch single.
The label originated from Terry Cole's passion for classic soul and funk recordings. Initially established to release The City, a recording project developed with musician Louis Rideout, Colemine gradually expanded into a platform for artists sharing an interest in organic, groove-oriented music. Early releases by The Jive Turkeys helped establish its distinctive identity, emphasizing powerful rhythm sections, vintage recording aesthetics, and the spontaneity of live performance.
During the 2010s, Colemine Records developed an increasingly diverse catalogue, bringing together musicians influenced by Southern soul, psychedelic funk, instrumental jazz, and rhythm and blues. A significant breakthrough came with Durand Jones & The Indications, whose self-titled debut album appeared in 2016. Combining expressive vocals, rich arrangements, and classic soul influences, the record introduced the group to a wider audience and strengthened the label's international reputation.
Other important artists helped shape the label's musical identity. The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio explored the Hammond-driven traditions of soul-jazz with their album Close But No Cigar, while Kelly Finnigan and Monophonics developed a distinctive combination of deep soul, psychedelic textures, and cinematic orchestration. Finnigan's solo album The Tales People Tell, released in 2019, became another defining release, demonstrating the emotional depth and musical sophistication of contemporary soul production.
The catalogue continued to expand through artists including Black Pumas, Ikebe Shakedown, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, The Harlem Gospel Travelers, The Ironsides, Thee Sinseers, and The Altons. Their recordings introduced elements of gospel, Afrobeat, Latin soul, psychedelic rock, and cinematic funk while preserving the label's emphasis on organic instrumentation and carefully crafted arrangements. Early releases by Black Pumas, particularly Black Moon Rising, also contributed to Colemine's growing visibility beyond the traditional soul and funk underground.
In 2018, Terry Cole launched Karma Chief Records, a sister imprint dedicated to psychedelic rock, garage rock, blues, and more experimental forms of vintage-inspired music. Featuring artists such as GA-20, Ghost Funk Orchestra, and The Winston Brothers, the imprint broadened the musical scope of the organisation while allowing Colemine Records to maintain its focus on soul, funk, and related traditions. The label's connection with Plaid Room Records, a record store established in Loveland, Ohio, further reinforced its commitment to independent distribution and vinyl culture.
Throughout the 2020s, Colemine Records continued to develop its catalogue with releases by Aaron Frazer, Kelly Finnigan, Monophonics, Thee Sinseers, and The Altons, demonstrating the continuing relevance of traditional soul aesthetics within contemporary music. Its distinctive visual identity, carefully designed record sleeves, and dedication to physical formats have also contributed to its reputation among collectors, DJs, and independent music enthusiasts.
Nearly two decades after its foundation, Colemine Records has established itself as one of the most respected independent labels associated with the modern soul and funk revival. By connecting the musical heritage of Stax, Motown, and the independent soul labels of the 1960s and 1970s with new generations of musicians, Terry Cole has created a platform where tradition and contemporary creativity coexist. Its catalogue reflects a consistent commitment to musical authenticity, analogue warmth, and the emotional power of live instrumentation, preserving the spirit of classic soul while allowing it to evolve through new artistic perspectives.
