Sylvaine

Sylvaine is the musical project of Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer Kathrine Shepard, whose work combines blackgaze, atmospheric black metal, shoegaze, post-rock, ambient music, and ethereal folk. Born in San Diego, California, and raised in Norway, Shepard has developed a deeply personal musical language characterized by the contrast between fragile, otherworldly vocal melodies and the overwhelming intensity of distorted guitars, blast beats, and expansive atmospheric textures. Her compositions explore themes of identity, spirituality, emotional vulnerability, nature, and the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Moving between moments of delicate introspection and powerful catharsis, Sylvaine creates music that feels simultaneously intimate, melancholic, and transcendent.

Growing up in a musical environment, Kathrine Shepard developed an early interest in singing, composition, and instrumental performance. Her father, Stephen Shepard, worked as a musician and recording engineer, exposing her to the creative and technical aspects of music production from a young age. She began writing her own material during her adolescence, gradually developing an approach that combined the emotional directness of alternative rock with the atmospheric possibilities of heavier and more experimental music. Influenced by genres ranging from classical music and shoegaze to black metal, Shepard became particularly interested in the expressive potential of contrasting sounds, using beauty and aggression as complementary elements rather than opposing forces.

The Sylvaine project emerged in the early 2010s as a means of exploring emotions and experiences that Shepard found difficult to communicate through conventional language. Working primarily as a solo musician, she developed a method of composition in which vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and atmospheric arrangements were carefully layered to create immersive sonic environments. The project's name reflects her fascination with nature and the idea of a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds, themes that would become central to her artistic identity.

Her debut album, Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart, appeared in 2014, introducing a sound rooted in atmospheric rock, shoegaze, and melancholic alternative music. The record established many of the characteristics that would define her later work, particularly the interaction between reverberating guitars, ethereal vocal harmonies, and emotionally charged arrangements. Although less explicitly connected to black metal than her subsequent releases, the album already revealed Shepard's fascination with contrasts between light and darkness, fragility and intensity, and isolation and emotional release.

With Wistful, released in 2016, Sylvaine moved toward a heavier and more expansive musical approach. Incorporating stronger elements of atmospheric black metal and post-metal, the album combined tremolo-picked guitars, intense percussion, and harsh vocals with the delicate melodic structures of her earlier compositions. The result placed her music closer to the emerging blackgaze movement while preserving its distinctive emotional sensitivity. The album also featured contributions from French musician Neige, the founder of Alcest, whose work had helped establish the connection between black metal, shoegaze, and dreamlike atmospheric music. This collaboration reflected the musical and aesthetic affinities between the two artists.

The release of Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone in 2018 marked another important stage in Shepard's development and strengthened her relationship with French extreme metal label Season of Mist. The album expanded the emotional and sonic contrasts of Wistful, combining shimmering guitar passages, expansive arrangements, and delicate vocals with increasingly intense black metal sections. Its compositions explored the instability of human existence, the search for belonging, and the tension between personal identity and the external world. Tracks such as Abeyance, Mørklagt, and L'Appel Du Vide demonstrated her ability to move fluidly between atmospheric contemplation and overwhelming sonic intensity.

With Nova, released through Season of Mist in 2022, Sylvaine reached a new level of artistic maturity. Conceived as an exploration of transformation, rebirth, and the relationship between the individual and the natural world, the album refined her characteristic combination of ethereal melodies and powerful blackgaze arrangements. Tracks including Mono No Aware, Nowhere, Still Somewhere, Fortapt, and Everything Must Come to an End unfold through gradual changes in dynamics, moving between intimate vocal passages, shimmering guitar textures, and explosive walls of sound. The album's emotional depth is reinforced by Shepard's remarkable vocal range, which allows her to alternate between fragile, almost whispered melodies, soaring choral harmonies, and raw black metal screams.

The title Nova reflects the album's central themes of renewal and transformation, suggesting both the destruction of an existing state and the emergence of something new. Throughout the record, Shepard examines the contradictions of human existence, particularly the desire for connection and the feeling of separation from the world. Her music often approaches these questions through imagery associated with forests, water, light, darkness, and the changing seasons. Rather than presenting nature simply as a source of aesthetic inspiration, Sylvaine treats it as an essential part of emotional and spiritual experience.

In 2024, Sylvaine released the EP Eg Er Framand, marking a significant departure from the dense electric arrangements of her previous albums. Drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music, the recording places greater emphasis on acoustic instrumentation, traditional melodies, and Shepard's expressive vocal performances. Its title translates approximately as I Am a Stranger, reflecting themes of alienation, belonging, and the search for identity. By interpreting traditional Norwegian songs through her own atmospheric sensibility, Shepard explored a more intimate connection with the musical heritage of the country in which she grew up.

The EP also revealed a different dimension of Sylvaine's artistic identity. Without the distorted guitars and extreme metal structures that characterize much of her earlier work, the emotional intensity of her compositions emerges through vocal phrasing, harmonic resonance, and the subtle interaction between acoustic instruments and atmospheric textures. This approach demonstrates that the essential qualities of her music are not dependent on heaviness or volume, but on her ability to communicate vulnerability, longing, and spiritual uncertainty through sound.

Beyond her studio recordings, Sylvaine has developed a reputation for emotionally immersive live performances. Although the project originates from Shepard's individual creative vision, she performs with accompanying musicians who translate her layered compositions into a powerful concert experience. Her performances move between moments of near silence and overwhelming intensity, emphasizing the dynamic contrasts that define her recordings. She has appeared at numerous European festivals and toured internationally, reaching audiences associated with atmospheric metal, post-rock, shoegaze, and experimental music.

Across her career, Sylvaine has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices within contemporary atmospheric metal and blackgaze. Her work brings together the emotional immediacy of shoegaze, the expansive structures of post-rock, the raw intensity of black metal, and the spiritual resonance of traditional folk music. Through her evolving relationship with Season of Mist, Kathrine Shepard has continued to explore new forms of expression while preserving the intimate emotional core of her compositions. Sylvaine ultimately transforms contrasts between light and darkness, fragility and violence, solitude and connection into deeply personal musical experiences, creating a world in which human vulnerability and the forces of nature seem inseparably intertwined.
