OM
OM is an American band formed in 2003 by Al Cisneros (bass and vocals) and Chris Hakius (drums), both former members of the influential stoner/doom metal band Sleep. Known for their hypnotic, meditative approach to heavy music, OM blends elements of doom, drone, and ritualistic repetition, creating expansive and trance-like compositions that emphasize spirituality and sonic immersion.
From their inception, OM sought to move beyond traditional metal structures, focusing on slow, repetitive riffs, mantra-like vocals, and minimalistic arrangements that encourage deep listening. Their debut album, Variations on a Theme (2005), introduced the band’s signature sound thick, droning bass lines, steady percussion, and chants that evoke both ritual and introspection. Subsequent releases, including Conference of the Birds (2006), Pilgrimage (2007), and God Is Good (2009), further refined their hypnotic approach, earning critical acclaim for their ability to create heavy yet meditative music.
Over the years, OM’s lineup has evolved, with drummers such as Emil Amos contributing to the band’s rhythmic foundation. Their later albums, including Advaitic Songs (2012) and Thebes (2017), continue to explore themes of spirituality, mysticism, and transcendence, often incorporating Eastern musical influences alongside their characteristic heavy drone.
Through their combination of repetition, minimalism, and spiritual intensity, OM has established themselves as a unique voice in modern heavy music. Their work transcends conventional genre boundaries, offering listeners an experience that is as meditative and ritualistic as it is powerful and sonically immersive.
