Neurosis
Neurosis is an American experimental metal band formed in Oakland, California, in 1985. Known for pioneering the genres of post-metal and sludge, Neurosis has been instrumental in expanding the boundaries of heavy music by blending extreme metal with ambient, industrial, and tribal influences. The band’s members include Scott Kelly (vocals, guitar), Steve Von Till (vocals, guitar), Dave Edwardson (bass), Jason Roeder (drums), and Noah Landis (keyboards, electronics).
Neurosis emerged from the hardcore punk scene of the mid-1980s, initially delivering aggressive, fast-paced music typical of the era. Over time, they evolved toward a more atmospheric and experimental sound, characterized by slow, crushing riffs, layered textures, and expansive song structures. Landmark albums such as Through Silver in Blood (1996) and Times of Grace (1999) cemented their reputation for creating music that is simultaneously oppressive and transcendent, combining sonic weight with emotional and spiritual depth.
Throughout their career, Neurosis has incorporated elements of noise, tribal percussion, ambient soundscapes, and post-rock dynamics, crafting immersive experiences that often blur the line between music and ritual. Collaborations with bands like Tribes of Neurot a side project exploring abstract sound and electronics further highlight their commitment to sonic experimentation.
Neurosis is also renowned for their intense and immersive live performances, where lighting, visuals, and sound are carefully orchestrated to create a fully enveloping atmosphere. Through decades of innovation, Neurosis has profoundly influenced countless bands across metal, post-rock, and experimental music, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of modern heavy and avant-garde music.
