Monolake

Monolake is the electronic music project of German producer Robert Henke, founded in Berlin in 1995 in collaboration with artist Gerhard Behles, who later co-founded Ableton. Monolake is known for its pioneering work in ambient, minimal techno, and sound design, blending precise rhythmic structures with immersive atmospheres and experimental textures.

Emerging from Berlin’s vibrant electronic scene in the 1990s, Monolake initially explored techno and dub-inspired rhythms, but quickly developed a distinctive aesthetic that emphasizes spatial depth, textural layering, and innovative use of technology. Their early releases, such as Hongkong (1997) and Cinemascope (1999), showcased Henke’s mastery of sound design, intricate programming, and unconventional sonic structures.

Monolake has been closely associated with innovation in music software and performance technology. Robert Henke, under the Monolake name, has created immersive audiovisual installations and live performances that integrate multi-channel sound, custom software, and live manipulation of electronic sound. Albums like Ghosts (2008) and Silence (2012) exemplify the project’s ability to merge minimalism, ambient textures, and rhythmic experimentation into deeply compelling listening experiences.

Through meticulous soundcraft and boundary-pushing performance, Monolake has become a highly influential figure in experimental electronic music, known not only for recordings but also for contributions to live electronic performance and the development of tools that shape modern electronic music production.
