Lowercase

Lowercase, often stylized as lowercase, are an American alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Palm Desert, California, by vocalist and guitarist Imaad Wasif and drummer Brian Girgus. Initially operating as a duo before relocating to San Francisco, the band developed an intense and deliberately minimal sound combining noise rock, post-hardcore, slowcore, post-punk, and lo-fi indie rock. Their music is characterized by distorted guitar, stark percussion, unstable dynamics, and vocals that move between restrained melancholy and desperate screaming.

Lowercase began by releasing a series of independent singles, including Sometimes I Feel Like a Vampire, Brass Tacks, and Cadence. Their debut album, All Destructive Urges… Seem So Perfect, was released through Amphetamine Reptile Records in 1996. The record established their fascination with contrast: fragile melodies and slow, spacious passages could suddenly erupt into violent guitar noise, pounding drums, and emotionally exposed vocals.

A defining characteristic of Lowercase’s music is the tension created with very limited instrumentation. Wasif’s guitar often repeats skeletal, dissonant patterns while Girgus plays with a combination of restraint and physical force. Rather than filling every moment with sound, the band use silence, repetition, and gradual escalation to create unease. Their songs can appear restrained and introspective before collapsing into bursts of distortion, giving the music a volatile emotional quality associated with both slowcore and post-hardcore.

For their second album, Kill the Lights, released in 1997, Lowercase expanded into a trio with bassist Justin Halterlein. The additional bass brought greater depth to their sound without removing its raw minimalism. Longer compositions such as Slightly Dazed, Rare Anger, and You’re a King allowed the band to explore hypnotic repetition, psychological tension, and slow-building heaviness. During this period, Lowercase toured with groups including Unwound, Sebadoh, Karp, Chokebore, Hovercraft, and Faith No More, gaining recognition within the American underground.

In 1999, Lowercase released their third and final album of their original period, The Going Away Present, through Punk in My Vitamins, the label associated with Unwound bassist Vern Rumsey. Featuring Tiber Scheer on bass, the album moved toward an even darker and more spacious form of noise rock. Its droning guitars, prolonged tension, and bleak atmosphere placed the band between the hypnotic minimalism of slowcore and the abrasive physicality of bands such as Slint, Unwound, Swans, and the Jesus Lizard. Lowercase became inactive around 2000, after which Wasif and Girgus pursued other musical projects.

The band’s recordings were made available digitally in 2020, including a collection of singles titled Aside and Besides and a set of early recordings. In 2025, Lowercase released Lucifer Sam b/w Charms and Violence, their first newly issued material in many years, accompanying a return to live activity.

Although their original catalogue consists of only three studio albums, Lowercase developed a distinctive position within 1990s American underground rock. Through minimal instrumentation, extreme dynamics, and an unusually vulnerable form of noise, the band created music that transforms exhaustion, alienation, anger, and emotional instability into slow-moving but explosive compositions.
