Death in Vegas

Death in Vegas

Death in Vegas is an English electronic music group formed in 1994, with Richard Fearless serving as the primary creative force and frontman. Originally established as a duo with Steve Hellier under the name Dead Elvis, the project evolved into one of the most innovative and genre-blending acts in electronic music, known for seamlessly incorporating elements from techno, rock, psychedelia, and industrial music.

The band's journey began when they signed to Concrete Records, though they had to change their name from Dead Elvis due to an existing Irish label. Their debut album, Dead Elvis (1997), used a blend of musical genres with most tracks mainly based in electronic dance music. After Hellier's departure following the first album, Tim Holmes joined as co-producer and engineer, helping to shape the band's evolving sound.

Death in Vegas achieved their breakthrough with The Contino Sessions (1999), which marked a slight change in direction with more attention to live instrumentation and the inclusion of guest vocalists including Dot Allison, Bobby Gillespie, Iggy Pop, and Jim Reid. The album's standout track Dirge became widely recognizable through its use in commercials and films, while Aisha featuring Iggy Pop became a top 10 UK hit and earned the band a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2000.

Their third album, Scorpio Rising (2002), took its name from the cult avant-garde film by Kenneth Anger and featured Liam Gallagher on the title track. The album continued their success in film and television soundtracks, with tracks appearing in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and other high-profile productions.

Death in Vegas established their own Drone Records label and released Satan's Circus (2004), which unlike previous albums did not feature guest vocalists, marking a return to a more electronic-focused approach. They also worked as producers for Oasis on their album Don't Believe the Truth.

The band's later releases included Trans-Love Energies (2011) featuring vocals by Katie Stelmanis of Austra, and Transmission (2016) featuring writer and actress Sasha Grey. Their music has maintained its cinematic quality and continues to find placement in films, television, and advertising, cementing Death in Vegas as influential pioneers in the crossover between electronic music and rock.
