Abul Mogard
Abul Mogard is the ambient and drone project of Italian electronic musician Guido Zen, launched in the early 2010s. Renowned for his immense, slow-moving compositions, Abul Mogard combines analogue synthesis, processed recordings, organ-like tones, distortion, and deep low frequencies to create music that feels simultaneously industrial, melancholic, and transcendent. His pieces often unfold gradually, transforming simple sustained sounds into dense environments shaped by memory, time, solitude, and emotional uncertainty.
The project was originally presented through a fictional biography in which Mogard was described as a retired Serbian factory worker who began producing electronic music after leaving industrial employment. Developed with visual artist Marja de Sanctis, this mysterious persona became inseparable from the project’s early reception. Guido Zen later revealed that the character had provided a form of creative protection during a difficult period, allowing him to explore music without the expectations attached to his own identity.
Mogard’s first self-titled release, Abul Mogard, appeared in 2012 through VCO Recordings. Created with limited equipment including Farfisa organs, a Moog synthesizer, samples, and homemade electronic devices the recording established his characteristic combination of raw machinery and emotional depth. Rather than constructing conventional melodies or rhythms, Mogard treated sound as a physical material, allowing tones to overlap, deteriorate, and accumulate into vast, slowly changing structures.
His debut full-length album, Circular Forms, was released in 2015 by Ecstatic Recordings. Built largely from Farfisa organs and a self-constructed modular synthesizer, the album introduced his music to a wider international audience. Its four extended compositions resemble enormous sonic landscapes, moving between warm harmonic resonance and abrasive electronic pressure. The compilation Works followed in 2016, bringing together material from Mogard’s earlier limited releases.
With Above All Dreams in 2018 and In Immobile Air in 2019, Abul Mogard further refined his ability to create emotionally charged music through sustained tones and gradual transformation. These recordings contain few recognizable rhythms, instead relying on subtle shifts in harmony, texture, volume, and distortion. Although often categorized as dark ambient or drone, Mogard’s music carries a powerful sense of movement, as if its monumental sound masses were continuously expanding, collapsing, and reforming.
Later releases demonstrated an increasingly collaborative side of the project. In a Few Places Along the River appeared in 2022, followed in 2024 by Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close, created with American ambient musician Rafael Anton Irisarri, and In Uno Spazio Immenso, a collaboration with Dutch-Italian composer Grand River. These works expanded Mogard’s sound through acoustic instrumentation, environmental recordings, and additional layers of studio processing while preserving its characteristic emotional weight.
In 2025, Mogard released Quiet Pieces through his own label, Soft Echoes. The album brings together ideas developed across different periods of his career, including recordings connected to a 2015 residency at Stockholm’s EMS studios and samples taken from old 78-rpm records inherited from his late uncle. This combination of damaged archival sound and contemporary electronics reflects Mogard’s fascination with the way memories fade, return, and acquire new meanings over time.
Mogard reunited with Rafael Anton Irisarri for Where Light Pauses in the Silence of the Sun, released in 2026 and developed from improvised performances in Berlin. Across his recordings and live appearances, Abul Mogard has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary ambient music. His work transforms electronic noise, analogue imperfection, and slowly unfolding drones into deeply human experiences music that seems suspended between industrial memory, personal loss, physical sensation, and the possibility of transcendence.
